My Gateway Books

Are you guys familiar with the term, “Gateway Drug”?  That’s how I feel about the books that we innocently take off the shelf, tuck in, and read.  But then we blackout, waking up eight months later, with an emotional hangover, wearing an “I Heart Bat Boys” shirt, in a sea of Amazon boxes, and massive credit card debt.  Yeah, me neither.  Weirdos.

What book was that for you?  For me, it was Twilight.  But wait, there’s more.  I didn’t read Twilight as a child.  No.  I read it as a fully, formed (ok…fully formed is debatable) grown up with a mortgage.  The year was 2020.  The mental state was chaos.  I needed something to quell the urge to walk around my neighborhood, in the rain, having a full out panic attack.  Not that that ever happened.  Because it didn’t.

So, I turned to vampires.  And wolves.  To be fair, I had recently finished The Alchemist, so let’s take a pause before forcing me to give back my English BA.  Now, I’m not going to get into Team Edward or Team Jacob because, let’s be honest, I’m only two posts in to this blog and I’d like to make it to at least three without burning this place down.  But what I am going to say is that, when I cracked open that first book, I stepped off the metaphorical ledge and began my descent.  Call me Alice because I have gladly fallen into this wonderland of painted worlds.

Let me know what was your gateway book.  What twisted, seductive morsel coaxed you over the edge into this world?
